While constantly evolving from a single building night school into the university it is today, Georgia State has built itself into the urban fabric of Downtown Atlanta. Whereas the school's nickname--dating from the early 1960s--of "the Concrete Campus" was once a source of mild embarrassment, today its unique setting is embraced with the slogan, "a part of the city, not apart from the city". This has led to the widening of sidewalks around the campus, and a focus on Decatur Street as becoming the "Main Street" of the campus.
