Ubon Ratchathani University - History

History

The university occupies a 2,100-acre (8.5 km2) campus in the Warin Chamrap district of Ubon Ratchathani Province, approximately 15 kilometers south of Ubon Ratchathani city. It has around 13,000 students in 10 faculties and 1 College.

The university's former English name, Ubon Rajathanee University, was mandated by its former president Prakob Wirojanagud who disliked the officially approved Royal Institute romanisation system that is used by the government to render the name of the province and city as Ubon Ratchathani. Staff and students protested against this alternative spelling as confusing for foreigners at whom romanization is aimed. The university returned to using the romanization in early 2010.

The university has students from all over Thailand, but most of its students are from the Isan region and from the southeast of Isan in particular.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

History has neither the venerableness of antiquity, nor the freshness of the modern. It does as if it would go to the beginning of things, which natural history might with reason assume to do; but consider the Universal History, and then tell us,—when did burdock and plantain sprout first?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The history of a soldier’s wound beguiles the pain of it.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

False history gets made all day, any day,
the truth of the new is never on the news
False history gets written every day
    ...
    the lesbian archaeologist watches herself
sifting her own life out from the shards she’s piecing,
asking the clay all questions but her own.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
