Famous quotes containing the words ohio, state, university, marching and/or band:

All inquiry into antiquity, all curiosity respecting the Pyramids, the excavated cities, Stonehenge, the Ohio Circles, Mexico, Memphis,—is the desire to do away this wild, savage, and preposterous There and Then, and introduce in its place the Here and Now.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

No healthy man, in his secret heart, is content with his destiny. He is tortured by dreams and images as a child is tortured by the thought of a state of existence in which it would live in a candy store and have two stomachs.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

The most important function of the university in an age of reason is to protect reason from itself.
    Allan Bloom (1930–1992)

John Brown’s body lies a-moldering in the grave,
    His soul is marching on.
    Thomas Brigham Bishop (1835–1905)

The band waked me with a serenade. How they improve! A fine band and what a life in a regiment! Their music is better than food and clothing to give spirit to the men.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
