Life and Career
Haines was born in 1972. His father, Kevin, played jazz bass, and his brother, Joel, played guitar. Haines played gigs with Joel across New Zealand, before moving to New York in 1991 to study jazz music.
Haines received classical training on flute and saxophone. His father Kevin Haines is an accomplished acoustic bassist. It is through his father that he was exposed to jazz music – particularly Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk.
Haines spent his formative years performing around Auckland with his brother Joel (guitarist). It was during this time that they joined the group Freebass in the early 1990s.
In 1991 at the age of 19 he moved to New York to further his study of jazz music. During this period he studied under saxophonists George Coleman and Joe Lovano. Haines became influenced by jazz fusion that blended hip-hop and dance music elements. After returning to New Zealand he performed between 1992 and 1995 at the club Cause Celebre. In 1994 he released his first solo album, Shift Left for the independent huh! label.
In 1995 he moved to London and experimented with different sounds. Collaborating with members from London drum and bass record company MetalHeadz, he produced several drum and bass influenced singles under the pseudonym ‘Sci-clone’.
Soundkilla sessions vol 1 were a mix of live and studio recordings from 1995/1996. 2000 saw the release of Sound Travels, which followed in the tradition of smooth jazz. More recently his work has involved a close relationship with a number of west London based artists. His 2003 album Squire for Hire possesses a diverse sound, featuring contributions from producers/performers Mark De Clive-Lowe, producer/poet Rich Medina, vocalists, Marcus Begg, Guida da Palma, Bembe Segue, Marlena Shaw and Blur front-man, Damon Albarn.
Haines performed on the Jamiroquai album, Dynamite (Jamiroquai album) and has recorded a song with 2D - Damon Albarn, titled FM, originally by Steely Dan.
Haines' album entitled Heaven & Earth was released in 2010 and a new album, "The Poet's Embrace" was released in March 2012. This album is a return to Haines' acoustic jazz roots and features pianist Kevin Field.
