After the war, Forrest became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Due to the Klan's history of bigotry and violence, controversy has arisen in recent years over memorials and entities named for Forrest, including Nathan Bedford Forrest High School in Jacksonville, Florida, and a proposal in Mississippi to honor Forrest on one of the state's specialty license plates.
