Mountain Zebra - Appearance

Appearance

Like all zebras, it is boldly striped in black and white and no two individuals look exactly alike. The stripe can be black and white or dark brown and white. Their stripes cover their whole bodies except for their bellies. The mountain zebra also has a dewlap.

Adult mountain zebras have a head-and-body length of 2.1 to 2.7 m (6.9 to 8.9 ft) and a tail of 40 to 55 cm (16 to 22 in) long. Shoulder height ranges from 1.1 to 1.5 m (3.6 to 4.9 ft). They weigh from 204 to 372 kg (450 to 820 lb). Groves and Bell found that the Cape mountain zebra exhibits reverse sexual dimorphism, with larger females than males, while the Hartmann's mountain zebra does not. The black stripes of Hartmann's mountain zebra are thin with much wider white interspaces, while this is the opposite in Cape mountain zebra.

They can live for up to three days without drinking water.

Famous quotes containing the word appearance:

What! Would you make no distinction between hypocrisy and devotion? Would you give them the same names, and respect the mask as you do the face? Would you equate artifice and sincerity? Confound appearance with truth? Regard the phantom as the very person? Value counterfeit as cash?
    Molière [Jean Baptiste Poquelin] (1622–1673)

Men of all professions affect such an air and appearance as to seem to be what they wish to be believed to be—so that one might say the whole world is made up of nothing but appearances.
François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (1613–1680)

The whole appearance is a toy. For this,
The dove in the belly builds his nest and coos,
Selah, tempestuous bird. How is it that
The rivers shine and hold their mirrors up,
    Like excellence collecting excellence?
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)
