Legal Issues
In a 1994 lawsuit against Brian Wilson, the jury's verdict established Love's co-authorship credit for many of The Beach Boys hits. Love argued that Murry Wilson, Brian Wilson's father and The Beach Boys first manager, fraudulently sold a catalog of the band's songs in which Love was excluded from royalties.
On November 3, 2005, Love, who owns the rights to The Beach Boys name, sued Brian Wilson and the Mail On Sunday newspaper, arguing that both misused Love's songs, likeness and The Beach Boys' name in a promotional CD that was given free with the paper to promote the 2004 Smile release. Love's case also argued that the unauthorized free CD resulted in loss of income and potential future sales for the band and damaged its reputation. The lawsuit was dismissed on May 16, 2007 on the grounds that it was without merit.

Famous quotes containing the words legal and/or issues:
“We should stop looking to law to provide the final answer.... Law cannot save us from ourselves.... We have to go out and try to accomplish our goals and resolve disagreements by doing what we think is right. That energy and resourcefulness, not millions of legal cubicles, is what was great about America. Let judgment and personal conviction be important again.”
—Philip K. Howard, U.S. lawyer. The Death of Common Sense: How Law Is Suffocating America, pp. 186-87, Random House (1994)
“I can never bring you to realize the importance of sleeves, the suggestiveness of thumb-nails, or the great issues that may hang from a boot-lace.”
—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (18591930)
