Women's Soccer Clubs
The pro division of U.S. Soccer first sanctioned a 1st division women's league in 2001. However, due to overwhelming debts, it suspended operations on September 15, 2003 after 3 seasons of play. In 2009, the replacement/revival of WUSA, Women's Professional Soccer, began play. Between the demise of WUSA and launch of WPS, two leagues served as de facto top-level leagues, the Women's Premier Soccer League and the W-League, part of the United Soccer Leagues.

Famous quotes containing the words women, soccer and/or clubs:
“We are seeing an increasing level of attacks on the selfishness of women. There are allegations that all kinds of social ills, from runaway children to the neglected elderly, are due to the fact that women have left their rightful place in the home. Such arguments are simplistic and wrongheaded but women are especially vulnerable to the accusation that if society has problems, its because women arent nurturing enough.”
—Grace Baruch (20th century)
“Our first line of defense in raising children with values is modeling good behavior ourselves. This is critical. How will our kids learn tolerance for others if our hearts are filled with hate? Learn compassion if we are indifferent? Perceive academics as important if soccer practice is a higher priority than homework?”
—Fred G. Gosman (20th century)
“We shall exchange our material thinking for something quite different, and we shall all be kin. We shall all be enfranchised, prohibition will prevail, many wrongs will be righted, vampires and grafters and slackers will be relegated to a class by themselves, stiff necks will limber up, hearts of stone will be changed to hearts of flesh, and little by little we shall begin to understand each other.”
—General Federation Of Womens Clubs (GFWC)
