Crittenden was born on August 29, 1969. She was educated at The Thacher School in Ojai, California. She is also a graduate of Miami Palmetto High School and graduated from Wesleyan University in 1992. Crittenden was married to fellow writer Jace Richdale for three years; they separated in 1998.
