Honduras National Football Team
The Honduran national football team, nicknamed Los Catrachos, La Bicolor or La H, is the national team of Honduras and is controlled by the Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras (FENAFUTH). They are a rising team in CONCACAF, an ascent that started with their third place finish in the 2001 Copa América, where they were a late invitee, due to a withdrawal by Argentina one day prior to kickoff. In October 2009, they confirmed qualification to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was their first appearance in the competition since 1982. The Central America derby is Honduras versus Costa Rica and Honduras has lost most of the matches of this fixture winning 16 times while the Ticos have won 18 times.
Honduras is also notable for the Football War which was fought against El Salvador, after the Salvadorans qualified for the 1970 World Cup eliminating Honduras. The elimination by the Salvadorans initiated the armed conflict after political tensions due to the deportations of Honduran nationals from the redrawn borders (see Football War).
