Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School

The Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School umpires for professional baseball is the only independently run professional umpire training program recognized by the Minor Leagues and Major Leagues. It is located in Ormond Beach, Florida. It runs for five weeks each early January through early February. The school is open to both males and females; indeed, the only female ever to work a Major League Baseball spring training game, Pam Postema, graduated from the school, as well as a number of other female professional umpires.

Famous quotes containing the words harry and/or school:

People named John and Mary never divorce. For better or for worse, in madness and in saneness, they seem bound together for eternity by their rudimentary nomenclature. They may loathe and despise one another, quarrel, weep, and commit mayhem, but they are not free to divorce. Tom, Dick, and Harry can go to Reno on a whim, but nothing short of death can separate John and Mary.
    John Cheever (1912–1982)

Dissonance between family and school, therefore, is not only inevitable in a changing society; it also helps to make children more malleable and responsive to a changing world. By the same token, one could say that absolute homogeneity between family and school would reflect a static, authoritarian society and discourage creative, adaptive development in children.
    Sara Lawrence Lightfoot (20th century)
