French Ambassador To The Ottoman Empire

France has had a permanent embassy to the Ottoman Empire since 1535, during the time of King Francis I and Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It is considered the direct predecessor of the modern-day embassy to the Republic of Turkey.

Famous quotes containing the words french, ambassador and/or empire:

Justice has its anger, my lord Bishop, and the wrath of justice is an element of progress. Whatever else may be said of it, the French Revolution was the greatest step forward by mankind since the coming of Christ. It was unfinished, I agree, but still it was sublime. It released the untapped springs of society; it softened hearts, appeased, tranquilized, enlightened, and set flowing through the world the tides of civilization. It was good. The French Revolution was the anointing of humanity.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

An ambassador is not simply an agent; he is also a spectacle.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

I do not believe I am exaggerating in affirming that the empire of Russia is a country whose inhabitants are the most miserable on earth, because they suffer at one and the same time the evils of barbarism and of civilization.
    Marquis De Custine (1790–1857)
