History
Several of the clubs currently playing in the league were formed as the soccer arm of cultural associations of recently migrated Australians, with certain teams having associations with particularly nationalities e.g. Swan United (formerly Swan Italian Club), Bayswater City and Perth SC (formerly Perth Italia) with Italian Australians, Morley Windmills with Dutch Australians, Floreat Athena with Greek Australians, Fremantle Spirit with Portuguese Australians, Inglewood United with Ukrainian Australians, Western Knights (formerly North Perth Croatia) and Cockburn City with Croatian Australians, Shamrock Rovers with Irish Australians, Dianella White Eagles with Serbian Australians and Stirling Lions with Macedonian Australians. In 1994 clubs were forced by the sport's governing body to remove all references to ethnicities from their names, which resulted in several named changes, including North Perth Croatia to Western Knights, Benfica United to Fremantle Spirit, Swan Italian Club to Swan United, Stirling Macedonia to Stirling Lions, Bayswater Inter to Bayswater United, Dianella Serbia to Dianella White Eagles, Inglewood Kiev to Inglewood United and Perth Italia to Perth SC. It is only recently that clubs have begun to be based geographically, with Mandurah City and ECU Joondalup recently established clubs.
In the 2011 season, the West Australian National Training Centre was introduced to the State League Premier Division. They do not play for points and is mostly used for Development of the upcoming youth. Although there has been controversy towards this movement as of the 2012 season it was announced that all games for teams against NTC will now be played for points. This will now enable first teams to put out competitive sides to obtain bonus points.
