Diffraction-limited System - Other Waves

Other Waves

The same equations apply to other wave based sensors, such as radar and the human ear.

As opposed to light waves (i.e. photons), massive particles have a different relationship between their quantum mechanical wavelength and their energy. This relationship indicates that the effective "deBroglie" wavelength is inversely proportional to the momentum of the particle. For example, an electron at an energy of 10 keV has a wavelength of 0.01 nm, allowing the electron microscope (SEM or TEM) to achieve high resolution images. Other massive particles such as helium, neon, and gallium ions have been used to produce images at resolutions beyond what can be attained with visible light. Such instruments provide nanometer scale imaging, analysis and fabrication capabilities at the expense of system complexity.

Famous quotes containing the word waves:

    It is only when we are very happy that we can bear to gaze merrily upon the vast and limitless expanse of water, rolling on and on with such persistent, irritating monotony, to the accompaniment of our thoughts, whether grave or gay. When they are gay, the waves echo their gaiety; but when they are sad, then every breaker, as it rolls, seems to bring additional sadness, and to speak to us of hopelessness and of the pettiness of all our joys.
    Emmuska, Baroness Orczy (1865–1947)

    When infant Science makes a pleasant face
    And waves again that hollow toy, the Race;
    Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869–1935)
