Family Background
The Li family, with roots in Heshan, Guangdong, has long had a prominent position in Hong Kong. David Li's great-grandfather, Li Shek-tang, made his fortune bringing rice to Hong Kong from Vietnam. In 1918, Li's grandfather, Li Koon-chun, along with his great-uncle, founded the Bank of East Asia, the first Chinese-owned bank in the territory. David's father is the very-nearly-disgraced former stock exchange chairman Ronald Li Fook-shiu, and one of his uncles is Simon Li Fook-sean, senior judge who ran in the first election for chief executive in 1996. David's cousin (Simon Li's daughter) is prominent barrister Gladys Li. David's younger brother is Arthur Li, former Secretary for Education and Manpower.

Famous quotes containing the words family and/or background:
“Because its not only that a child is inseparable from the family in which he lives, but that the lives of families are determined by the community in which they live and the cultural tradition from which they come.”
—Bernice Weissbourd (20th century)
“I had many problems in my conduct of the office being contrasted with President Kennedys conduct in the office, with my manner of dealing with things and his manner, with my accent and his accent, with my background and his background. He was a great public hero, and anything I did that someone didnt approve of, they would always feel that President Kennedy wouldnt have done that.”
—Lyndon Baines Johnson (19081973)
