Dark Matter Halo

A dark matter halo is a hypothetical component of a galaxy that envelops the galactic disk and extends well beyond the edge of the visible galaxy. The halo's mass dominates the total mass. Since they consist of dark matter, halos cannot be observed directly, but their existence is inferred through their effects on the motions of stars and gas in galaxies. Dark matter halos play a key role in current models of galaxy formation and evolution.

Famous quotes containing the words dark, matter and/or halo:

While I wrought out these fitful Danaan rhymes,
My heart would brim with dreams about the times
When we bent down above the fading coals
And talked of the dark folk who live in souls
Of passionate men, like bats in the dead trees....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

... anything a powerful group has is perceived as good, no matter what it is, and anything a less powerful group has is not so good, no matter how intrinsically great it might be.
    Gloria Steinem (b. 1934)

There is a touch of divinity even in brutes, and a special halo about a horse, that should forever exempt him from indignities.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
