Theories About The Nature of Dark Matter
The nature of dark matter in the galactic halo of spiral galaxies is still undetermined, but there are two popular theories: either the halo is composed of weakly interacting elementary particles known as WIMPs, or it is home to large numbers of small, dark bodies known as MACHOs. It seems unlikely that the halo is composed of large quantities of gas and dust, because both ought to be detectable through observations. Searches for gravitational microlensing events in the halo of the Milky Way show that the number of MACHOs is likely not sufficient to account for the required mass.

Famous quotes containing the words theories, nature, dark and/or matter:
“The real trouble about women is that they must always go on trying to adapt themselves to mens theories of women, as they always have done. When a woman is thoroughly herself, she is being what her type of man wants her to be. When a woman is hysterical its because she doesnt quite know what to be, which pattern to follow, which mans picture of woman to live up to.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“So each man, like each plant, has his parasites. A strong, astringent, bilious nature has more truculent enemies than the slugs and moths that fret my leaves. Such a one has curculios, borers, knife-worms; a swindler ate him first, then a client, then a quack, then smooth, plausible gentlemen, bitter and selfish as Moloch.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The change from storm and winter to serene and mild weather, from dark and sluggish hours to bright and elastic ones, is a memorable crisis which all things proclaim. It is seemingly instantaneous at last.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“If human beings are immortal, so are animals. If matter has the ability to remember, it also has the ability to think.”
—Franz Grillparzer (17911872)
