Bhopal State (pronounced ) was an independent state of 18th century India, a princely salute state in a subsidiary alliance with British India from 1818 to 1947, and an independent country from 1947 to 1949. Islamnagar served as the State's first capital, which was later shifted to the city of Bhopal.
The state was founded by an Afghan Mughal soldier, Dost Mohammad Khan, who became a mercenary after the Emperor Aurangzeb's death and annexed several territories to his feudal territory. Bhopal State accepted the suzerainty of the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1724, and later became a British protectorate in 1818. Bhopal was the second largest Muslim state in pre-independence India, after Hyderabad. The state was merged into the Union of India in 1949 as Bhopal.

Famous quotes containing the word state:
“If music in general is an imitation of history, opera in particular is an imitation of human willfulness; it is rooted in the fact that we not only have feelings but insist upon having them at whatever cost to ourselves.... The quality common to all the great operatic roles, e.g., Don Giovanni, Norma, Lucia, Tristan, Isolde, Brünnhilde, is that each of them is a passionate and willful state of being. In real life they would all be bores, even Don Giovanni.”
