Al-Karkh SC of Iraq are the most successful club in the competition's history, having won the tournament three times. Saudi Arabian clubs have accumalated the highest number of victories, with 8 wins. The title has been won by 17 different clubs, 7 of which have the title more than once. Since the tournament changed name and structure in 2003, only ES Sétif of Algeria have managed consecutive wins, successfully defending their title in 2008. The reigning champions are Espérance Sportive de Tunis, after beating Wydad Casablanca 2–1 on aggregate in the 2009 final.

The competition was first known as the Arab Club Champions Cup, and established in 1982. In 2001, it merged with the Arab Cup Winners' Cup to form the new Prince Faisal bin Fahd Tournament for Arab Clubs, named after Faisal bin Fahd. Between 2003 and 2009, the competition was known as the Arab Champions League.

In 2012 the competition was re-branded as the UAFA Cup in a partnership with World Sport Group.

Famous quotes containing the words arab, champions and/or league:

As the Arab proverb says, “The dog barks and the caravan passes”. After having dropped this quotation, Mr. Norpois stopped to judge the effect it had on us. It was great; the proverb was known to us: it had been replaced that year among men of high worth by this other: “Whoever sows the wind reaps the storm”, which had needed some rest since it was not as indefatigable and hardy as, “Working for the King of Prussia”.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)

Did all the lets and bars appear
To every just or larger end,
Whence should come the trust and cheer?
Youth must its ignorant impulse lend—
Age finds place in the rear.
All wars are boyish, and are fought by boys,
The champions and enthusiasts of the state:
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

Half a league, half a league,
    Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.
    “Forward the Light Brigade!
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)
