Famous quotes containing the words student, athletes, high and/or school:

A black sun has appeared in the sky of my motherland.
Wuer Kaixi, Chinese student leader. Quoted in Independent (London, June 29, 1989)

To read well, that is, to read true books in a true spirit, is a noble exercise, and one that will task the reader more than any exercise which the customs of the day esteem. It requires a training such as the athletes underwent, the steady intention almost of the whole life to this object.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Come Sleep! Oh Sleep, the certain knot of peace,
The baiting-place of wit, the balm of woe,
The poor man’s wealth, the prisoner’s release,
Th’indifferent judge between the high and low.
    Sir Philip Sidney (1554–1586)

In truth, the legitimate contention is, not of one age or school of literary art against another, but of all successive schools alike, against the stupidity which is dead to the substance, and the vulgarity which is dead to form.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)
