President of Mauritius - Powers

Powers

While the president is the head of state, they have no real power over the government. The president should not be in any political party while serving, though many served in a party in some other posting.

His or her job is to represent the country on international basis but not govern the country, it is the Prime Minister who governs. He nevertheless earns the highest salary in the government service.

The president resides at the Château of Réduit with his partner and the general secretary.

If the president does not agree to sign a bill, amendment or act on the second time that it has been put before them, they are given no other choice but to leave the office to make way for a new president. The president is nominated and elected by the National Assembly.

Famous quotes containing the word powers:

The powers that be are ordained of God.
—Bible: New Testament St. Paul, in Romans, 13:1.

Great Powers of falling wave and wind and windy fire,
    With your harmonious choir
Encircle her I love and sing her into peace,
That my old care may cease....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

Strange and predatory and truly dangerous, car thieves and muggers—they seem to jeopardize all our cherished concepts, even our self-esteem, our property rights, our powers of love, our laws and pleasures. The only relationship we seem to have with them is scorn or bewilderment, but they belong somewhere on the dark prairies of a country that is in the throes of self-discovery.
    John Cheever (1912–1982)
