History

The first Wisconsin State Fair was held in 1851 in Janesville, with approximately 13,000 to 18,000 people in attendance. The fair migrated to different towns before finding its permanent home in West Allis in 1892. According to state fair officials, 911,231 people attended the 2011 event.

During the 2011 fair hundreds of adolescent African Americans formed a flash mob and began attacking White and Hispanic Americans. Police said the group of young people attacked fair goers who were leaving the fair grounds. Police said that some victims were attacked while walking. They said others were pulled out of cars and off of motorcycles before being beaten. Eighteen people, including seven police officers, were reported to have been injured during the event. In addition there were reports of looting within the fair. At least 31 people were arrested in total.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Every library should try to be complete on something, if it were only the history of pinheads.
    Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809–1894)

History has neither the venerableness of antiquity, nor the freshness of the modern. It does as if it would go to the beginning of things, which natural history might with reason assume to do; but consider the Universal History, and then tell us,—when did burdock and plantain sprout first?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

“And now this is the way in which the history of your former life has reached my ears!” As he said this he held out in his hand the fatal letter.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)
