Eligibility
In order to apply for the WIC assistance program, one must be a pregnant woman, breastfeeding for up to one year, postpartum for up to six months, or have young infants (0–1 years old) and children (under 5 years old) with specific nutritional needs.
After meeting these basic eligibility requirements, applicants must also satisfy the following criteria to receive assistance:
- Income
- Family income must be at or less than 185% of the current federal poverty level. This is around $45k for the median income of a family of four.
- Residence
- Must be a resident of the county to which they are applying for assistance.
- Nutrition risk
- Must have a nutritional risk assessment by a qualified health professional. The Nutritional evaluation is based on height, weight, and growth assessment; hematocrit or hemoglobin levels; general health history; and a diet assessment.
