Village
The village is centred at the intersection of two roads: Colchester Road and Lexden Road, but extends out a great distance in all directions. It is served by a local shop that has changed ownership a number of times in recent years, beginning as a locally run enterprise, called Elmer's, and now run by the East of England Co-operative Society. It was recently enlarged, and now has three times the old floor space.
Around the village lie numerous farms and large areas of woodland, including Hilhouse Wood, always known locally as Bluebell Wood, which was purchased by The Woodland Trust with the help of local people. Many walks exist through the wood, and a migrant population of various breeds of deer can sometimes be seen.

Famous quotes containing the word village:
“This is the village where the funeral
Stilted its dusty march over deep ruts
Up the hillside covered with queens lace
To the patch of weeds known finally to all.”
—Allen Tate (18991979)
“Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
“There were those young men,
those village lands
and that youthfulness of mine.
People tell it
like a tale
that I must listen to.”
