Washakie - Washakie and Episcopalism

Washakie and Episcopalism

In 1883, John Roberts, an Episcopalian, was assigned to minister to the Shoshone and Arapahos on the Wind River Reservation. Earning the friendship of Washakie by learning the Shoshone customs, beliefs and language, he was given land to establish a boarding school where Shoshone girls learned traditional crafts and language. Chief Washakie chose Episcopalism as his faith and was baptized again as an Episcopalian in 1897.
