Vipeholm Experiments - Revelations

Revelations

Not until the 1990s did studies appear about the ethical aspects of the Vipeholm experiments.

In 2000 the Swedish ombudsman of the disabled reported that the "excesses" of the study were not justified by the result.

Elin Bommenel, a historian and doctoral student at Linköping University, performed a thorough study of the Vipeholm experiments in her dissertation, published in 2006. She was the first researcher to gain access to the original documents from the experimental period at Vipeholm. Her research describes how the scientists found themselves in the interstice between research and care, and under great pressure from political and economic interests.

Famous quotes containing the word revelations:

The perfect God in his revelations of himself has never got to the length of one such proposition as you, his prophets, state.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Slowly ... the truth is dawning upon women, and still more slowly upon men, that woman is no stepchild of nature, no Cinderella of fate to be dowered only by fairies and the Prince; but that for her and in her, as truly as for and in man, life has wrought its great experiences, its master attainments, its supreme human revelations of the stuff of which worlds are made.
    Anna Garlin Spencer (1851–1931)

It is disturbing to discover in oneself these curious revelations of the validity of the Darwinian theory. If it is true that we have sprung from the ape, there are occasions when my own spring appears not to have been very far.
    Cornelia Otis Skinner (1901–1979)
