Varma - Traditional Usage

Traditional Usage

Varma and its variants, meaning “shield”, was originally used by warriors.

Although primarily a Kshatriya (Khatri) title, Brahmins in parts of Orissa also used it despite being, by definition, not of the Kshatriya varna.

Famous quotes containing the words traditional and/or usage:

The invention of photography provided a radically new picture-making process—a process based not on synthesis but on selection. The difference was a basic one. Paintings were made—constructed from a storehouse of traditional schemes and skills and attitudes—but photographs, as the man on the street put, were taken.
    Jean Szarkowski (b. 1925)

Girls who put out are tramps. Girls who don’t are ladies. This is, however, a rather archaic usage of the word. Should one of you boys happen upon a girl who doesn’t put out, do not jump to the conclusion that you have found a lady. What you have probably found is a lesbian.
    Fran Lebowitz (b. 1951)
