History
The Vancouver Fire Department was established in 1886, and within sixteen days of its existence the City of Vancouver burned to the ground. By 1911 the department was one of the region's best and by 1917 it was completely motorized (no more horse drawn equipment).
Since 1893, 48 Vancouver firefighters have died in the line of duty.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, through their eyes. Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs?”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The disadvantage of men not knowing the past is that they do not know the present. History is a hill or high point of vantage, from which alone men see the town in which they live or the age in which they are living.”
—Gilbert Keith Chesterton (18741936)
“A man will not need to study history to find out what is best for his own culture.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
