History
The UCLA School of Nursing was founded in 1949 as one of the professional schools of the UCLA Center for the Health Science, authorized by The Regents of the University of California. In 1950, the school offered an undergraduate program in nursing, Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. A year later in 1951, a graduate program the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Nursing was offered. An alternative to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Nursing, the Master of Nursing (M.N.) degree was available in 1966. Three years later in 1969, the Master of Science degree was cancelled. In 1986, The Regents of the University of California approved the Doctor of Nursing Science (D.N.Sc.) degree, and in 1987 the first doctoral students were admitted. In 1996, the Office of the President proposed a change in the designation of the master’s degree from M.N. to Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.). Previously in 1995, The Regents also approved a change in the doctoral degree designation from D.N.Sc. to Ph.D. in Nursing. A revision of the B.S. program curriculum was made in 1997, mostly to accommodate the needs of students who were licensed nurses with Associate of Science (A.S.) degrees, or had a diploma in nursing. In 2006 the school brought back a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program in which prospective Nursing students who met the required admission requirements were allowed admission at the freshman level. The master's entry clinical nurse (MECN)/pre-licensure program option within the M.S.N. degree program also began. This program is designed for pre-licensure students who have earned their bachelor’s degree in another subject. The UCLA School of Nursing is approved by the Undergraduate and Graduate Councils of the Academic Senate of the University of California at Los Angeles. The pre-licensure (BS-G and MECN) and master’s programs in advanced practice are approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. In 2001, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited the existing bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for a term of 10 years. The University of California, Los Angeles holds Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation.
