UC Riverside Student Recreation Center was opened in January 1994, constructed entirely from student fees. Its purpose is to build students' physical fitness and recreation, as well to host UC Riverside Highlanders athletic teams. The 80,000 square feet (7,400 m2) structure seats up to 3,168 people. In the Summer of 2003, a new public address system and sound enhancing tiles were installed to improve fans' viewing and listening experience. An expansion plan for the Student Recreation Center includes tripling the size of the current fitness center, doubling the amount of multipurpose rooms, and adding a swimming pool complex to the facility.
