History
Electric suburban services began in Wellington in July 1938, following the opening of the Tawa flat deviation of the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT). The Johnsonville Line, the formerly the route of the NIMT out of the capital, was the first line to be electrified. By 1940 the NIMT itself had been electrified as far north as Paekākāriki (on the Kapiti Line), followed by electrification of the rebuilt Hutt Valley Line in stages between 1953 and 1955, to coincide with major state housing developments in the area. The NIMT electrification was extended to Paraparaumu in the early 1980s.
