Tiling Window Manager - Automatic Program Launch

Automatic Program Launch

Tiling window managers are often programmatic in nature, for example the Ion window manager includes a Lua scripting engine for both configuration and startup functions, in additional to modular function libraries. Where as a conventional coordinate based Stacked desktop methaphor environment (Windows platform) has a Startup folder with applications to launch, programmable tiling window managers can specificy (with a default window property) which tiles or frames an application should appear in.

Common uses for this are setting up a development environment with IDE and terminal windows, or an image, video, or audio editting environment with multiple screens.

Famous quotes containing the words automatic, program and/or launch:

Predictions of the future are never anything but projections of present automatic processes and procedures, that is, of occurrences that are likely to come to pass if men do not act and if nothing unexpected happens; every action, for better or worse, and every accident necessarily destroys the whole pattern in whose frame the prediction moves and where it finds its evidence.
    Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)

The last public hanging in the State took place in 1835 on Prince Hill.... On the fatal day, the victim, a man named Watkins, peering through the iron bars of his cell, and seeing the townfolk scurrying to the place of execution, is said to have remarked, ‘Why is everyone running? Nothing can happen until I get there.’
—Administration for the State of Con, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

Now launch the small ship, now as the body dies
and life departs, launch out, the fragile soul
in the fragile ship of courage, the ark of faith
with its store of food and little cooking pans
    and change of clothes,
