Tanka - Other Forms of Waka

Other Forms of Waka

The term waka originally encompassed a number of differing forms, principally tanka (短歌, "short poem"?) and chōka (長歌, "long poem"?), but also including bussokusekika, sedōka (旋頭歌, "memorized poem"?) and katauta (片歌, "poem fragment"?). These last three forms, however, fell into disuse at the beginning of the Heian period, and chōka vanished soon afterwards. Thus, the term waka came in time to refer only to tanka.

Famous quotes containing the word forms:

Media mystifications should not obfuscate a simple, perceivable fact; Black teenage girls do not create poverty by having babies. Quite the contrary, they have babies at such a young age precisely because they are poor—because they do not have the opportunity to acquire an education, because meaningful, well-paying jobs and creative forms of recreation are not accessible to them ... because safe, effective forms of contraception are not available to them.
    Angela Davis (b. 1944)
