Swim Bladder - Human Uses

Human Uses

In some Asian cultures, the swim bladders of certain large sea fishes are considered a food delicacy. It is usually served braised or in stews. Swim bladders are also used in the food industry as a source of collagen. They can also be made into a strong, water-resistant glue, or used to make isinglass for the clarification of beer.

The gas/tissue interface at the swim bladder produces a strong reflection of sound, which is used in sonar equipment to find fish.

Famous quotes containing the word human:

It is not possible, for a poet, writing in any language, to protect himself from the tragic elements in human life.... [ellipsis in source] Illness, old age, and death—subjects as ancient as humanity—these are the subjects that the poet must speak of very nearly from the first moment that he begins to speak.
    Louise Bogan (1897–1970)

Lars Jorgensen: It’s this country killed my boy. Yes, by golly, I tell you Ethan—
Mrs. Jorgensen: Now Lars. It just so happens we be Texicans. A Texican is nothing but a human man way out on a limb, this year, and next, maybe for a hundred more. But I don’t think it’ll be forever. Someday this country’s going to be a fine good place to be. Maybe it needs our bones in the ground before that time can come.
    Frank S. Nugent (1908–1965)
