Use of Stretching For Standard Definition Networks

Some select networks, such as MavTV, World Fishing Network, and many of the all-music video networks in the MTV Networks Digital Suite such as MTV Hits, MTV Jams and mtvU only are carried in 480i standard definition or have low opportunities for high definition simulcasts of their networks to be carried by cable or satellite providers due to a lack of compelling content or demand for their network's content in high definition by providers or viewers. These channels have begun to offer their 480i channels with a 16:9 image compressed horizontally to fit a 4:3 screen. This allows display of the content in its native format if a viewer uses the "stretch" or "fill" mode on a 16:9 display, though the image is not as high quality as that of high definition, or even an equivalent native 480p image in 16:9. In the mtvU example, the move is purposeful as the network is transmitted mainly to university and college campus closed circuit television systems which transmit no high definition content due to cost concerns, but have installed lighter and less bulky LCD/LED televisions in common areas of their campuses.

Famous quotes containing the words stretching, standard, definition and/or networks:

There was now no road further, the river being the only highway, and but half a dozen log huts, confined to its banks, to be met with for thirty miles. On either hand, and beyond, was a wholly uninhabited wilderness, stretching to Canada.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A dwarf who brings a standard along with him to measure his own size—take my word, is a dwarf in more articles than one.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

... if, as women, we accept a philosophy of history that asserts that women are by definition assimilated into the male universal, that we can understand our past through a male lens—if we are unaware that women even have a history—we live our lives similarly unanchored, drifting in response to a veering wind of myth and bias.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

The community and family networks which helped sustain earlier generations have become scarcer for growing numbers of young parents. Those who lack links to these traditional sources of support are hard-pressed to find other resources, given the emphasis in our society on providing treatment services, rather than preventive services and support for health maintenance and well-being.
    Bernice Weissbourd (20th century)
