Stacking Window Manager - Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows has used stacking window management since version 2.0, with the addition of overlapping windows. Prior to that, Microsoft Windows used a tiling window manager. This window manager has remained virtually unchanged since then.

Microsoft Windows XP still exclusively uses a stacking window manager, which has presented severe limitations to its ability to display hardware-accelerated content inside normal windows, although it is technically possible to produce some visual effects using third-party software. Microsoft Windows Vista abandoned this technology in favor of a compositing window manager.

Famous quotes containing the word windows:

In winter we lead a more inward life. Our hearts are warm and cheery, like cottages under drifts, whose windows and doors are half concealed, but from whose chimneys the smoke cheerfully ascends.... We enjoy now, not an Oriental, but a Boreal leisure, around warm stoves and fireplaces, and watch the shadow of motes in the sunbeams.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
