Criticism of South West Trains
In May 2011, the train company faced media attention after dismissing a ticket clerk for carrying out unauthorised work on the track of an active, electrified railway line in Hampshire. As the clerk claimed to be removing an obstacle from the track, the press supported him and a 7,000-name petition was collected. The case was heard at an Industrial Tribunal in Southampton on 1 November 2011, where South West Trains presented its side of the story. The ticket clerk did not contest his dismissal when his barrister was presented with the full facts of the case by SWT.
