History
Ula Ula Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the Divisional Boards Act 1879. A municipal council for its main town, St George, was gazetted on 31 July 1884, but was soon amalgamated back into the division. On 11 March 1901, the division was renamed Balonne after the Balonne River. With the passage of the Local Authorities Act 1902, it became a shire on 31 March 1903.
