Rugby League in The Americas - Canada

Rugby league has been played in Canada in the past at an amateur level, but earlier competitions were disbanded and the sport was dormant between the year 2003 and 2010.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a four-team domestic competition, known as the 'Tri-Country Rugby League', was established with three Canadian clubs and one U.S. club competing - Kingston, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec, and Adirondacks (USA).

There were two regional nines tournaments as recently as 2003, one in Ontario and one in Manitoba.

The national rugby league team has won two games, against the USA in 1987 and Japan in 2000. While the Canadian Rugby Football League who organized these tournaments has long since folded; a new organization called Rugby League in Canada has been founded with an aim of restoring competition. Since the reformation of the national rugby league team under the CRL, Canada has won further matches against USA and Jamaica.

The Canada national rugby league team' has been participating in international competition since 1987, and last played as a national team on April 7, 2001 when they were defeated 56-24 by the Glen Mills Bulls at Jack Pearson Oval, Glen Mills.

Canada has participated in the World Sevens (1995, 1996) and Emerging Nations World Cup (2000) competitions. However, rugby league remains a largely unknown code in Canada and the national team remains uncompetitive as a result

While the Canadian Rugby Football League has folded and the game with it a new organization called Rugby League in Canada has been founded with an aim to recreate the national team and the game in Canada.

Famous quotes containing the word canada:

I fear that I have not got much to say about Canada, not having seen much; what I got by going to Canada was a cold.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I do not consider divorce an evil by any means. It is just as much a refuge for women married to brutal men as Canada was to the slaves of brutal masters.
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)

This universal exhibition in Canada of the tools and sinews of war reminded me of the keeper of a menagerie showing his animals’ claws. It was the English leopard showing his claws.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
