Robert Henry Cain - Second World War

Second World War

In April 1940, shortly after the start of the Second World War, Cain was given an emergency commission into the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers as a Second Lieutenant. In 1942, he was seconded to 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment before being temporarily promoted to the rank of Major in April 1943—a position he would keep until being honourably granted the rank in 1945. In the same month, Cain took command of the battalion's B Company.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:

    all must die.

    Only a sweet and virtuous soul,
    Like seasoned timber, never gives;
    But though the whole world turn to coal,
    Then chiefly lives.
    George Herbert (1593–1633)

    As a war in years of peace
    Or in war an armistice
    Or a father’s death, just so
    Our parting was not visualized....
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
