Geography
Retamal de Llerena is located at 38'35" latitude in the county of Campiña Sur. The distance to the provincial capital, Badajoz is 138 km and to the regional capital, Mérida, is 66 km. The municipality occupies 96.10 km ² of land at an altitude of 467 meters above sea level.
It is located at the northern county line in the foothills of the Argallanes Range. Although it is geographically nearer to La Serena,the appellation, Llerena, derives from its inclusion in the judicial District of Llerena.
Despite their official inclusion in Campiña del Sur, the people of Retamal have a closer relationship with the neighboring towns of the county of La Serena, the most important of which is Zalamea de la Serena. Other nearby towns are Campillo de Llerena, Higuera de la Serena, Valle de la Serena, Hornachos and Castuera, on which they depend for certain services. The Guadámez River, which crosses the municipality about 5 km away from the town itself, is the nearest river apart from small streams.
The municipality connects the counties of Tierra de Barros, La Serena, Campiña del Sur and Las Vegas Bajas del Guadiana. To the north, it borders with Oliva de Mérida and Valle de la Serena; to the northeast with Higuera de la Serena and Zalamea de la Serena; to the southeast with Campillo de Llerena and to the southwest with Hornachos.
