Raymond Collishaw - Early Life

Early Life

Raymond Collishaw was born at Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada on 22 November 1893. His father was John Edward Collishaw from Wrexham, Wales and his mother Sarah "Sadie" Jones from Newport, Wales but raised in Pantygog, Garw Valley.

At the age of 15, the younger Collishaw joined the Canadian Fisheries Protection Services as a cabin boy. He was a lower class sailor on board the Alcedo when it sailed into the Arctic Circle in search of the Stefansson expedition. Unfortunately, it turned out that the expedition was too late to rescue the Karluk. He would continue working on ships and the coast for the next seven years. By 1915, he had worked his way up to first officer.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

I have always had something to live besides a personal life. And I suspected very early that to live merely in an experience of, in an expression of, in a positive delight in the human cliches could be no business of mine.
    Margaret Anderson (1886–1973)

... such is the horrible idea that I entertain respecting a life of servitude, that if I conceived of there being no possibility of my rising above the condition of servant, I would gladly hail death as a welcome messenger.
    Maria Stewart (1803–1879)
