He commenced an apprenticeship as a Fitter/Turner, and did Secondary Level years 11 and 12 subjects part-time. He qualified with top achievement at the completion of his apprenticeship, during and after which he did engineering units one day per week, night classes, and by correspondence. He received a Doctorate and was accepted as suitably qualified by authorities to head a team of engineers and scientists in a highly sophisticated technological field.
