The President of the State of Israel (Hebrew: נשיא המדינה, Nesi HaMedina, lit. President of the State; Arabic: رئيس الدولة) is the head of state of Israel. The position is largely an apolitical ceremonial figurehead role, with the real executive power lying in the hands of the Prime Minister. The current president is Shimon Peres who took office on 15 July 2007. Presidents are elected by the Knesset for a seven-year term, and are limited to a single term.

Famous quotes containing the words president and/or israel:
“I dont have any problem with a reporter or a news person who says the President is uninformed on this issue or that issue. I dont think any of us would challenge that. I do have a problem with the singular focus on this, as if thats the only standard by which we ought to judge a president. What we learned in the last administration was how little having an encyclopedic grasp of all the facts has to do with governing.”
—David R. Gergen (b. 1942)
“Who is the LORD, that I should heed him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go.”
—Bible: Hebrew, Exodus 5:2.
