Poker Strategy - Sandwich Effect

Related to the gap effect, the sandwich effect states that a player needs a stronger hand to stay in a pot when there are opponents yet to act behind him. Because the player does not know how many opponents will be involved in the pot or whether he will have to call a re-raise, he does not know what his effective pot odds actually are. Therefore, a stronger hand is desired as compensation for this uncertainty. A squeeze play exploits this principle.

Famous quotes containing the words sandwich and/or effect:

    Twenty-four-hour room service generally refers to the length of time that it takes for the club sandwich to arrive. This is indeed disheartening, particularly when you’ve ordered scrambled eggs.
    Fran Lebowitz (b. 1950)

    That when that knot’s untied that made us one,
    I may seem thine, who in effect am none.
    And if I see not half my dayes that’s due,
    What nature would, God grant to yours and you;
    Anne Bradstreet (c. 1612–1672)
