Picket Fence - History

History

It is particularly popular in the United States, where the style has been used since America's earliest colonial era, and remains popular in current times. A picket fence is a decorative way to contain pets and children without blocking out any views, and because of its decorative element, can be popular for the front yard additional to the back yard. Traditionally picket fences were only made out of wood and painted white (or whitewashed), but now picket fences are also widely available in polyvinyl chloride, which is also known as PVC.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Social history might be defined negatively as the history of a people with the politics left out.
    —G.M. (George Macaulay)

The history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

Postmodernism is, almost by definition, a transitional cusp of social, cultural, economic and ideological history when modernism’s high-minded principles and preoccupations have ceased to function, but before they have been replaced with a totally new system of values. It represents a moment of suspension before the batteries are recharged for the new millennium, an acknowledgment that preceding the future is a strange and hybrid interregnum that might be called the last gasp of the past.
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. Sunday Times: Books (London, April 21, 1991)
