Peter Shumlin - Political Positions

Political Positions

Shumlin is a prominent opponent of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant, whose owner, Entergy, recently sued the State of Vermont in Federal court to enable use of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's recently approved 20-year extension to the plant's operating license. On balance, Entergy won that lawsuit, but the verdict is now under appeal by the state.

Two days after Shumlin was elected Governor, the owners of Vermont Yankee put it up for sale. However, there have been no bidders for its purchase thus far.

Shumlin is adamantly pro-choice, drawing a contrast between himself and his Republican gubernatorial opponent Brian Dubie, who would not answer the question of whether or not he would cut funding for low-income abortions when pressed by Shumlin during the two candidates' televised debates. He held a pro-choice rally two days prior to the election, prompting his opponent to host a pro-jobs rally on the same day to draw a contrast between the two candidates' priorities.

In 2011, Shumlin expressed his support for "Team Kale" and said it sends the message "Don't mess with Vermont" to fast food restaurant Chick-fil-A.

Famous quotes containing the words political and/or positions:

America is a nation with no truly national city, no Paris, no Rome, no London, no city which is at once the social center, the political capital, and the financial hub.
    C. Wright Mills (1916–1962)

The season developed and matured. Another year’s installment of flowers, leaves, nightingales, thrushes, finches, and such ephemeral creatures, took up their positions where only a year ago others had stood in their place when these were nothing more than germs and inorganic particles. Rays from the sunrise drew forth the buds and stretched them into long stalks, lifted up sap in noiseless streams, opened petals, and sucked out scents in invisible jets and breathings.
    Thomas Hardy (1840–1928)
