Peter Shumlin

Peter Elliott Shumlin (born March 24, 1956) is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who serves as the 81st and current Governor of Vermont. First elected Governor in the 2010 election, he was re-elected by a large margin in 2012. He previously served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1990 to 1992 and represented the Windham District in the Vermont Senate for eight non-consecutive two-year terms. First, from 1993 to 2003, where he served in various leadership positions before leaving to become the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Vermont, losing to Republican nominee Brian Dubie. After working in the family business for a number of years, he returned for a second spell in the Vermont Senate, serving from 2007 to 2011 before being elected Governor.
