Both permanent and determinant are special cases of a more general function of a matrix called the immanant.

Famous quotes containing the word permanent:

Sickness comes to us all, Mr. Dillon.... We never know when, we never know why, we never know how. The only blessed thing we know is it’ll come at the most inconvenient, unexpected time. Just when you’ve got tickets to the World Series. And that’s the way the permanent waves.
    Donald E. Westlake (b. 1933)

Cynicism makes things worse than they are in that it makes permanent the current condition, leaving us with no hope of transcending it. Idealism refuses to confront reality as it is but overlays it with sentimentality. What cynicism and idealism share in common is an acceptance of reality as it is but with a bad conscience.
Richard Stivers, U.S. sociologist, educator. The Culture of Cynicism: American Morality in Decline, ch. 1, Blackwell (1994)

During these fits of absolute unconsciousness I drank, God only knows how often or how much. As a matter of course, my enemies referred the insanity to the drink rather than the drink to the insanity. I had indeed, nearly abandoned all hope of a permanent cure when I found one in the death of my wife.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
