Pauley Pavilion - Retired Numbers

Retired Numbers

Further information: UCLA Bruins men's basketball retired numbers

The retired numbers of UCLA men's and women's basketball players are displayed in the rafters of Pauley Pavilion. On February 3, 1990, the first four UCLA basketball player jersey numbers were retired. This was the key moment in the "Pauley at 25" celebration of the first twenty-five years of the arena. The primary criteria for being chosen was that all four players were three-time All-Americans.

The initial honorees were:

  • Ann Meyers #15
  • Denise Curry #12
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (played under his original name of Lew Alcindor) #33
  • Bill Walton #32

Famous quotes containing the words retired and/or numbers:

I will never accept that I got a free ride. It wasn’t free at all. My ancestors were brought here against their will. They were made to work and help build the country. I worked in the cotton fields from the age of seven. I worked in the laundry for twenty- three years. I worked for the national organization for nine years. I just retired from city government after twelve-and-a- half years.
    Johnnie Tillmon (b. 1926)

The only phenomenon with which writing has always been concomitant is the creation of cities and empires, that is the integration of large numbers of individuals into a political system, and their grading into castes or classes.... It seems to have favored the exploitation of human beings rather than their enlightenment.
    Claude Lévi-Strauss (b. 1908)
